The Legacy of Black Women

Black women maintain a strength that is undeniable and built to last through challenges. This philosophy stems from Black culture and throughout the African diaspora being socialized as the caretaker, leader, and nurturer that is upheld today. These traits allowed us as Black women to be great wives, mothers, and sisters in the home. This extends into being leaders in the world including educators, entrepreneurs, healthcare, law, government, social services, and the arts. When Black women take on these leadership roles, they have made the world a better place. The roles we have can be gratifying and fulfilling, providing love and care for our community.

Self-care Is a Right

Leadership focuses on being change agents, thought leaders, innovators, and pathfinders. Leadership also involves taking control of our lives, so we can respond to our personal needs and desires. We need to add self-care to respond to our needs. Self-care can start with healthy eating, exercise, religious and/or spiritual practices, and spa days. It can also include socialization, i.e., travel, movies, reading, or attending religious services.

One major need is mental health. This area of health is often overlooked if we are not in the hospital or acting out with unorthodox behavior. Psychotherapy can be a great source of self-care when you schedule time to reflect on how you feel internally within a safe space.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is self-reflection and increasing self-awareness to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in your life and all the environments you inhabit. As you self-reflect, you take inventory of what is working and what is not working in your life. You can keep, add, and subtract things according to your life goals and where you want to be. Make psychotherapy a part of your self-care routine. If you don't have a self-care routine, you can use psychotherapy to do so. If you already have a self-care routine, it might be time to review and reflect on how it helps and what adjustments to make.

In addition to struggling with toxic relationships, do you also:

  • Have challenges with transitions or adjustments in life: new job, retirement, new parent, new marriage, divorce, death of a loved one, etc.
  • Struggle with unhealthy coping mechanisms for stress and painful experiences, including eating, sexual behaviors, alcohol and substance misuse, and shopping.
  • Experience the inability to care for yourself due to being a caregiver for a family member or close friend.
  • Have challenges with co-parenting, including miscommunication and visitation issues.
  • Feeling guilt or shame for not following religious values or morals, trying to maintain perfection.

Meet Eva M. Gordon, LCSW "A partner in the healing process and reconnection to yourself".

When you work with me as your psychotherapist, I want to support you with accountability and empathy. Many people I have worked with feel misunderstood and as though no one understands how they feel. Active listening is needed to understand where a client is and where they want to go. It's hard to heal from past and present pains if no one is there to listen. Most of all, it's hard to heal if we suppress the pain ourselves. This is quite a challenge for many people. As your therapist, I want to be a partner in helping you heal by reconnecting you to yourself so you can regain control of your life.

I find that conversations with active listening and empathy allow people to express themselves, especially those who have been silenced or misunderstood by family, friends, and the world. As a Black woman of American and Caribbean descent, I especially welcome Black professional women to have therapy sessions as an act of self-love. Make psychotherapy a part of your wellness routine.

Methods and Treatments

Sessions are framed with a client-centered approach, using a strength-based perspective. Several other methods are used, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Identify how thoughts and emotions impact our behavior.
  • Psychodynamic: Explore how the past impacts the present and the mental health journey.
  • Psychoeducation: Providing information on mental health topics and coping skills.
  • Social-Emotional: Develop healthy social and emotional skills to improve relationships and relate to others. This involves exploring biological and environmental factors.
  • Cultural framework: Culture is part of a person's identity and how they view the world and themselves. Culture influences socialization, which impacts a person's mental health.

Services and Sessions

During your consultation you can decide if you want to move forward with me as your therapist. We  can finalize a day and time to meet for sessions. Sessions are 50-55 minutes in length. In order to begin receiving therapy we have to use assessment tools to explore your current health status. Initially the clinician will do information gathering for your background to create a service plan to improve your quality of life.

Rates and Payments

The practice also partners with companies that can work with your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. Mentaya and Thrizer work with insurance companies on your behalf by submitting the superbill and then receiving reimbursement.

I can check your benefits for you and let you know exactly what you’d pay per session before we even get started. If you have OON benefits, you may only owe a copay at each session instead of the full fee.

The cost is $250 per session.
